July 12, 2026: The Unforced Joy

Joy ✦ Delight ✦ Play ✦ Celebration ✦ Lightness

A peach eaten slowly over the sink, juice running down the wrist, sweet, and no one earned it. That is joy, and it does not wait to be deserved: the table was set before any reason arrived. What pleasure could you let in today without asking why?

Overall Frequency

There is a peculiar finding buried in the world's spiritual literature, and it runs against everything the sober-minded assume about religion: the traditions command joy. Not politely recommend it. Command it. "Rejoice evermore," writes Paul, unconditionally. The Hasidic masters ranked despondency close to sin and dancing close to prayer. The Jewish festival calendar does not suggest celebration; it requires it, on schedule, whether the harvest was good or not. This morning the traditions gather around that strange requirement, and around the Sunday question it raises: when did you last actually rejoice?

A Reflection Question

What was I doing the last time joy arrived without my working for it?

A Practice for Today
