July 11, 2026: The Honest Craft

Work ✦ Craftsmanship ✦ Offering ✦ Diligence ✦ Integrity

The back of a drawer is planed smooth, though no buyer will ever turn it over to check. That is craft, the old word for work made whole where no eye follows. The finish does not stay in the wood; it settles into the hands that did it. There is one unseen surface in your day, and only you decide how it is finished.

Overall Frequency

There is a story told of old cabinetmakers: that they finished the backs of drawers no customer would ever see, planing and joining hidden wood as carefully as the show face. Asked why, one is supposed to have answered: because I see it. This morning the traditions gather around that answer, because every one of them has something to say about the hidden backs of drawers, about the quality of work when no one is watching, and about what work becomes when it is done as an offering instead of a transaction.

A Reflection Question

Where in my work, paid or unpaid, have I been finishing only the faces people see?
