October 5, 2026: The Steady Wick

Consistency ✦ Modest Flame ✦ After Enthusiasm ✦ The Trimmed Lamp ✦ Quiet Continuance

Run a lamp tall and it smokes and drinks its oil by midnight; trimmed low, the wick is still burning at dawn. That is consistency. By October the year's enthusiasms are old, and the only question left is whether the thing is still lit. Four in the morning: one small clean flame in the window, and the tall lamp dark for hours.

Overall Frequency

Every oil lamp teaches the same counterintuitive lesson: turn the wick down. Run it tall and bright and it smokes, chars, and drinks its fuel; trimmed low and clean, it burns all night on almost nothing. October's first Monday arrives exactly where the lesson lands: the year's enthusiasms are old now, the January resolutions and the September fresh starts, and what remains is the honest question of the lamp: not how brightly you began, but what your wick is doing tonight.

A Reflection Question

What would a two-minute version of my guttering practice look like?

A Practice for Today

Trim one wick today: take the struggling habit and cut it to a size that survives the worst day, then keep it at that size.

Universal Guidance

✦

The lamp that lasts the night is the one turned low, trimmed clean, and lit again at the same hour without discussion. Burn modestly; be found burning.
