Balance ✦ Equilibrium ✦ The Equinox ✦ Both-And ✦ The Middle Way

An old iron hinge is worn bright where the door swings. It keeps the door hanging true, and it does that by turning, every time the door moves. That is balance: not a thing you settle once, but a thing you meet again and again. Tonight at dinner, what in your life holds steady only because you keep coming back to it?

Overall Frequency

About now, this very week, the sun crosses the celestial equator, and for one day the ancient ledger balances: light and dark in equal measure, everywhere on earth, pole to pole: the equinox, the year's own act of perfect fairness. And then, note well, the year moves on: the balance held for a day, not annexed: the dark now gaining, as the light did in March, the whole system balanced not by standing still but by endless, faithful oscillation. This morning the traditions gather at the year's hinge, because balance is among their most invoked and least understood teachings: invoked as if it were a settled state one might finally achieve: taught, by every lens that matters, as something else entirely: a living adjustment, a crossing renewed, the tightrope walker's continuous small corrections that look, from the ground, like stillness.

A Reflection Question

What small correction do I keep putting off, where my life has leaned too long?

A Practice for Today

Stand outside this week at sunrise or sunset, facing east or west, and watch the sun. The year is turning right there, in front of you.

Universal Guidance

✦

The year balances on almost none of its days, and yet has never once lost its poise: that is the whole instruction. Correct early, correct small, honor both poles in their season: and stand, today, at the hinge where the sky itself is showing you how.
