August 23, 2026: The Rose Window

Beauty ✦ The Gratuitous ✦ Wonder ✦ Making ✦ Light Through Glass

High in a wall of gray stone sits one wheel of colored glass. It keeps out no weather and holds up nothing, and still the builders raised it past every use they had. The old word for it is beauty: the needless thing made carefully anyway. One corner of your day is waiting for you to leave it lovelier than its work requires.

Overall Frequency

High in the north wall of Chartres cathedral hangs a circle of glass forty feet across, eight centuries old, that has never once been necessary. It keeps out no more weather than plain glass would; it holds up nothing; by every engineering measure it is an extravagance. And people who do not share its theology stand under it and weep. This morning the traditions gather beneath the rose window to consider beauty: the most gratuitous fact in the world, the thing no survival argument fully explains, and the one gift, the lenses quietly agree, that keeps giving evidence of a giver.

A Reflection Question

What beauty passed through my ordinary day today that I never stopped to open?

A Practice for Today

Give one beauty your full attention today: a song heard all the way through with your eyes closed, or ten quiet minutes at a window. Phone down.

✦

The window holds up nothing, keeps out nothing, and eight centuries of the unpersuaded still weep under it. Beauty is the part of the world that behaves like a gift: open it, and leave one behind.
